This enamel witch’s heart locket, likely in possession of French King Louis Philippe I (the final king of France), bears the name of his grandson German Prince Phillipe de Württemberg. In 18k gold and traces of blue enamel remaining from when it was first commissioned in 1840, it’s possible this was a token of christening to reflect his catholic faith as the prince was only 2 years old when this charm was engraved. The locket may have once held a lock of his hair, or another article of sentiment. Over time it appears another caretaker added this charm to a necklace or bracelet that contained various other charms.

His mother was French Princess Marie of Orléans, his father was Duke Alexander of Württemberg, and his grandfather was King Louis Philippe I. Prince Phillipe was just two years old when this piece was commissioned, and he was raised by the last King of France, King Louis Philippe I; and Queen Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily. This is because his mother died at age 25 when he was just an infant, and his father made several sacrifices to King Louis Philippe in order to marry Prince Philippe’s mother, including converting to the catholic faith and having him raised in Paris after Princess Marie’s death. Therefore, it is likely that both the king and queen of France were caretakers of this piece whilst the prince was a toddler, as he was living in France with his royal grandparents during this locket’s creation.

The Kingdom of Württemberg, as is listed in the prince’s title, was a German state that existed from 1806 to 1918.

Materials: 18k yellow gold, blue enamel (top bail is base metal and likely a later addition).

Condition: Some small perforations in the gold, knicks to clear compartment and traces of blue enamel missing.
