A release from the vault archives. This rare opera token was issued to the 7th Earl of Stamford in 1856 and he personally held this token to enter Her Majesty’s Theatre venue.

George Grey, also known as Lord Stamford, served as a captain in the Cheshire Yeomanry (1845–56) and was a cricketer. His wife upon his death was Dowager Countess of Stamford and Warrington. As he had no children, this token was possibly passed down to her. His Wikipedia page is below, and his portrait is pictured above (credit: National Trust Collections):

Jane Austen notoriously collected opera tokens and pierced them to be worn on a bracelet. Elizabeth Taylor brought opera tokens into pop culture by also wearing them on a necklace gifted to her by Edith Head. Due to their popularity and rarity, opera tokens have become increasingly harder and more difficult to find. This particular token would look stunning to wear by adding a gold coin bezel to wear as a pendant, or simply enjoy this as a beautiful token to behold with a rich history from 150+ years ago.
